If you're looking for a robust feature set from your security suite, and you want an affordable price, you could do worse than Trend Micro's 2010 products. Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, Trend Micro Internet Security, and the stripped-down Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware have been refreshed, with the publisher claiming significant performance enhancements to each.

Trend Micro is claiming that boot times are 20 percent faster than with the previous versions, that the programs use 40 percent less RAM, the download itself is 25 percent smaller, and that the quick scan on Windows Vista and Windows XP is 20 percent faster. There are new features, too, including an autorun disabler for USB keys, a gaming and video mode so that scans don't start while you're deep into your entertainment, and system restore features in the System Tuner. The interface has been streamlined slightly, as well, making for easier navigation.

The Good:
Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2010 is one of the most comprehensive security suites we've encountered, with everything covered from basic threat detection to a behavior-based prevention system to security for Symbian and Windows Mobile devices.

The Bad:
Virus detection and removal efficacy is hard to determine; the service is acceptable, but not stellar; and while Trend Micro Internet Security Pro offers browsing protection, launching a link from within the program feels sluggish and awkward.

The Bottom Line:
Trend Micro Internet Security Pro's broad feature set combined with its look and feel make it a serious contender, but questionable efficacy and middling performance mean it's a program we're not recommending for this year.

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2010

Trend Micro's 2010 suite is supposedly designed for performance, and certainly it sped through our scans. But we measured a merely average startup time of 17 seconds and a middling RAM footprint of 98MB.

Although this is a slight disappointment, overall protection was far more positive. Trend's engine picked up 97% of our malware samples, and all the web pages we visited that were known to host malware were blocked via a blacklist, along with a clear description of the threat, before they started to load.

Trend didn't alter the outward appearance of our mail client, but when infected emails arrived it threw up blue and red requesters, asking us what to do. We were less taken with its firewall performance: it failed to warn us that we were being scanned, and revealed three open TCP ports to the attacker.

Trend's standard suite includes parental controls that let you bar certain users from transmitting certain information - handy if your kids know your credit card number.
